Football - Week 3 Recap

09/16/2024

Prior to Thursday night, I incorrectly assumed that Week 3 would be a relatively boring weekend of football, especially given the chaos from the week before.  I can happily report that I was incredibly inaccurate!

The weekend kicked off with a thriller in San Marcos with Arizona State defeating Texas State.  Meanwhile, South Alabama put up 87 points on Northwestern State.  That's the most points any FBS team has scored in a single game in my lifetime.

On Friday night, the focus was on the ranked matchup between Arizona and Kansas State, battle of Wildcats.  Despite the experts suggesting an even game, Kansas State ran away with it.  At the same time, UNLV upset Kansas, bringing themselves up to 3-0 on the year and potentially becoming the favorite group of five team to make the playoffs.

Saturday kicked off with College Gameday at the University of South Carolina.  Nick Saban being hand-fed steak by Pat McAfee and the worst field goal challenge attempt ever were the major highlights.  The game that followed was one of my favorite of the season so far.  Were it not for a late missed field goal, we'd have had overtime as a cherry on top.  In the end, LSU got a big SEC win.  Up north, Alabama took carry of Wisconsin and their striped stadium crowd.  In the funniest result of the day, Memphis took down Florida State to add to their immense misery.

Other major storylines throughout the day were Tennessee absolutely dismantling Kent State, proving to the rest of the SEC that they are for real yet again.  Georgia, on the other hand, struggled against Kentucky, but managed to squeak out with a victory.  Quinn Ewers, once again, went down injured in Texas' demolishing of UTSA.  Arch Manning really showed up in his place, though, and with Ewers' absence not to last more than a couple weeks, Texas look to be the new best team in the country.  Out in the pacific northwest, Oregon are back to their ways with a huge win against in-state rivals Oregon State.  Washington State took down last-year's runner-up in the Apply Cup.  Pitt with a huge comeback victory over West Virginia was also absolute cinema.  An angry Colorado stepped up to beat Colorado State for the second year in a row and Auburn finally beat a team from New Mexico.

Overall, this week was pleasantly entertaining.  With even more ranked matchups next week, a new AP poll leader and an SEC on fire, this season is just starting to get good.
