Football - Week 7 Headlines

10/14/2024

Even the most casual of college football fans had October 12th marker on their calendars well before Saturday.  Unless your team lost, there could be zero disappointment.  Overtime games, thrilling ranked finales, upsets, shocks, and more scoured the slate of games that had people pumped and ready from the day the schedule was released.  Let's get into the headlines!

Arizona State Take Down the 7-Year Vet

Cam Rising had a nightmare of a game that ended with injury on Friday night in Tempe, Arizona.  The Sun Devils have been flying a bit under the radar and are now on the verge of being ranked.  Their hopes for the Big 12 Championship Game are still very much alive after taking down a ranked Utah program.

Alabama Survives South Carolina

Coming off a shocker against Vanderbilt, Alabama returned home expecting to comfortably handle South Carolina.  The Gamecocks looked inspired, but the Crimson Tide suffered an abundance of self-inflicted wounds, especially late in the first half.  With his job potentially on the line, Kalen DeBoer led the Tide to a victory to keep their season alive.

Texas Dominates Red River

The Longhorns are the new kings of the SEC right now!  Oklahoma had no answer for a returning Ewers and a powerhouse Texas defense in the Cotton Bowl.  The Sooners will sooner see their playoff hopes dashed than score a touchdown in the Red River Rivalry.  With 21 second quarter points, Ewers coming back from injury, and a wall of a defense, Texas STOMPED their Big 12 (sorry, SEC...) rivals!

Army/Navy Undefeated and Ranked

Fans are rejoicing in Army and Navy both being undefeated for the first time in forever and both being ranked for the first time since the 60s!  Navy had a bye, but Army decimated UAB over the weekend.  Are these teams legit?  Will we see them in back-to-back weeks with the AAC Championship on the line?  Both will have to take down Notre Dame to say undefeated.  The playoffs appear to be a very real possibility for the most patriotic teams in college football.

Penn State Take Down USC In OT

A comeback for the ages took place in the LA Memorial Coliseum as Penn State travelled way out west for a conference game against USC!  Winning the second half 24-10, the Nittany Lions saved a disappointing upset by taking down the wayward Trojans in OT.

Vanderbilt Again In UK

The Commodores just keep winning!  Kentucky, another double digit favorite, are the latest victim of the nerds of the SEC.  There may have been some clockwork controversy at the end, but the Wildcats crumpled to Vandy, who have now improved to 4-2 and are on the verge of being ranked in the AP poll against literally all the odds.

Gators Almost Take Down The Vols

A packed, checkered crowd in Neyland Stadium saw the Florida Gators decide to actually play football this week.  The Volunteers were on the edge of their seat in what had originally appeared to be a blowout.  If not for some strange play calls by Florida, Tennessee might no longer even be a real playoff contender!  Alas, a missed field goal in overtime just adds to the sadness that is the Florida Gators season thus far.

Magnolia Bowl Thriller

One does not simply walk into Death Valley at night and beat LSU!  Not even the Rebels of Ole Miss who marched in ranked in the Top 10 despite an upset loss to Kentucky.  A late, game-tying drive from LSU led to overtime where Ole Miss, for lack of a better description, absolutely fell apart.  LSU remains undefeated in SEC play.

K-State Survive the NIL Magnets

Late night football in the land of Deion Sanders and his sons was electric!  A hot Colorado took on a rebounding Kansas State.  Colorado led a late comeback to take the lead, but left time in the clock.  In the end, it was long-haired Avery Johnson who led the Wildcats on a game-winning drive to save their season and Big 12 Championship hopes.  Colorado may finally be down and out.

Ducks Quack A Nut in Eugene

I definitely saved the best for last!  A pre-sunrise College Gameday opened the morning with excitement in an amazing atmosphere all led by the duck mascot in Eugene, Oregon!  All the hype leading into the #2 vs #3 matchup was far from unwarranted.  In what was the best game of the season so far, in my opinion, the Oregon Ducks hung on by a singular point to take down the Buckeyes of Ohio State!

We are halfway through the regular season and things are heating up!  Conference play is no well underway and standings are beginning to take shape.  With so many extra playoff spots on the line, every win is magnified.  Teams with a loss already still have hope and conference play means so much more with the automatic bid opportunities.  It will be hard to top this week, but with MACtion yet to begin, some major ranked conference games upcoming, and rivalry week only a month and a half away, there is so much to play for and so many more teams with playoff ambitions than ever before at this point in the season.
